What is nature-inclusive construction?

Nature-inclusive construction is a method of designing and building that gives nature a permanent place in the built-up environment. Architects integrate facilities into their designs that provide space for (protected) birds, bats, insects, and other species. This enhances biodiversity and creates a healthier living environment for both humans and animals.

Why nature-inclusive construction is becoming increasingly important

Increasing urbanization is causing the disappearance of many places for roosting and nesting for many animal species. Counties and project developers are therefore increasingly imposing requirements for biodiversity and nature-inclusive measures in new construction. Architects play a key role in this: with smart design choices, they can make the difference between a building that excludes nature and one that welcomes it.

Vivara Pro supports architects with practical knowledge, technical documentation, and product solutions that can be easily integrated into their designs. Think of built-in bricks for swifts, sparrows, or bats that fit seamlessly into the facade without compromising its appearance. Vivara Pro has made IFC files available for download for these products, so that architects can easily get started with nature-inclusive construction. These can be found at the bottom of this page.

Nature-inclusive construction is no longer a trend, but an essential part of sustainable design. Architects play a key role in designing buildings that are not only functional and aesthetic, but also contribute to biodiversity and a healthy living environment.

Relevant and future-oriented

The construction sector faces the challenge of realizing climate-adaptive and future-proof solutions. The concept of nature-inclusive construction fits in seamlessly with this. More and more municipalities are incorporating nature-inclusive measures into their policies and setting biodiversity requirements for new projects. For architects, this offers opportunities to:

  • Comply with sustainability objectives and local legislation and regulations.
  • Distinguish projects through ecologically responsible design.
  • Contribute to a positive image of the built environment.

By taking into account nesting and roosting places for species such as swifts, sparrows, and bats as early as the design phase, architects can make a big ecological difference without additional structural interventions.

The added value in design

Nature-inclusive solutions do not have to limit design. With carefully chosen products, architects can integrate nature into facades and roofs in a way that is both functional and visually appealing.

  • Built-in nesting boxes and nesting facilities can be integrated into the facade design in a virtually invisible way.
  • Green roofs and facades improve the appearance of a building and contribute to climate adaptation.
  • Natural materials create a sustainable look and a better living environment.

This creates architecture that strengthens the connection between people and nature, without compromising on design quality. A Standford and Leiden University study shows that nature-inclusive construction has effects on overall wellbeing and reduces level of stress, anxiety, and depression.
