Maternity pole box for serotine bats

After ten years of intensive research into the behaviour of the serotine bat, Stichting de Laatvlieger (Dutch founding) has developed a special maternity pole box. This box has been designed based on extensive field knowledge and practical insights gained by the foundation through years of research.

Developed based on practical research

The new experimental pole box has been specifically developed to serve as a suitable maternity roost for serotine bats in locations where there are currently insufficient roosting opportunities. In the Netherlands, there are many promising foraging areas where no suitable roosting sites are available nearby. By strategically placing these facilities, this bat species can be better supported and conserved.

In addition, this pole box can also be used experimentally as a mitigation measure in area development projects.

Inspired by natural roosting sites

The roof construction and interior of the pole box are designed to resemble a church attic where a maternity colony of serotine bats has been present for many years. This makes the box a potentially attractive roosting site for the species.

Exclusively produced by Vivara Pro

Vivara Pro has received the exclusive licence from Stichting de Laatvlieger to produce and market this box. This guarantees the quality and application of the design.

Monitoring and further development

Every installed maternity pole box is carefully tested and monitored. Stichting de Laatvlieger monitors the use of the box by bats in the field and uses the results to further optimise the design. Based on this monitoring, the box may be further improved in the future.
