Description

This integrated nest box is a suitable replacement for sparrow nesting sites in building facades. Due to its maximum depth dimension of 160 mm, it also fits into existing construction and can therefore be used in renovations or post-insulation projects. The height of this built-in brick fits perfectly into a 4-layer wall format. Sparrows live in colonies so installing several integrated nest boxes together is recommended, with a minimum spacing of 50 cm between the nest boxes to avoid stress and agression among the sparrows in the colony. The integrated nest box may also be inhabited by other species such as tits. This integrated nest box is made of FSC® WoodStone® and can be opened at the front for cleaning if desired. WoodStone® is a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades.

  • Install the integrated nest box horizontally with the front flush with the facade. It is preferable to install several nest boxes together, with a minimum horizontal and vertical spacing of 50 cm, to allow for the possibility of colony establishment.
  • When possible, install the integrated nest boxes high up and under the eaves of the roof. If that is not possible, then install the nest box at least 3 meters high in the facade.
  • Do not install boxes directly over doors or windows.
  • Facades facing north and east are preferred as they are generally more sheltered from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. It is also possible to install the nest box in another facade as long as it is well-protected from sun, rain, and wind (for example, under a roof overhang where there are no protruding pipes or parts that obstruct the entrance). Do not install the nest boxes where there is exposure to direct sunlight or on southwest facades where there is a chance of rain intrusion.

This built-in nest box can be cleaned. To do this, remove the box door by unscrewing the screw at the top and twisting the bottom screw hook. Now the old nest can be removed. The best time to clean the nest box is October or November, well after the breeding season. The sparrows will continue to use the integrated nest box in the winter months and may even already begin bringing back nesting material. Breeding will take place again starting in April.
