Sand martins are not typically known as nest box dwellers. However, these nest boxes can provide this species with an artificial nesting opportunity. Nest boxes can be placed in a homemade art wall or in the specially made art wall OW OZ 01.
Nest boxes are ideally used in the immediate vicinity of water or at large (construction) sites where excavation work is taking place, as swallows often try to nest in the large piles of sand. Installing an artificial wall in these situations offers sand martins a safe place to nest without disturbance.

Installation depends on the chosen application.
- When used in our wall OW OZ 01, place the nest boxes with the entrance opening on the designated platforms against the front wall.
- When doing this, ensure that the entrance opening is horizontal and positioned off-center at the bottom. The tunnel should then slope slightly upward into the nest area.
The nest box can be cleaned once a year at the end of the season, starting in October. Remove the old nest by opening the door at the back of the box.
