This built-in brick provides nesting opportunities for swifts and can be used in new construction as well as renovation projects. Many older homes were built with standard wall-size bricks and a 6 cm cavity. This integrated Swift brick fits into these dimensions.

Description

This integrated box is a suitable replacement for swift nesting sites in building facades. Due to its maximum depth dimension of 160 mm, it also fits into existing construction and can therefore be used in renovation or post-insulation projects. The height of this swift brick fits perfectly into a 3-layer wall format, and the box can be installed with the entrance opening to the left or right. House sparrows also like to use this built-in nest box. This is beneficial for the discovery of the nest box by swifts. If the swift wants to take over the nest box occupied by house sparrows, the swifts will simply evict the sparrows. This nest box is made of 100% WoodStone® with a waterproof-glued FSC®-plywood rear wall. WoodStone®is a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades.

  • Install the integrated nest box horizontally with the front flush with the facade. It is preferable to install several nest boxes together, with a minimum horizontal and vertical spacing of 50 cm, to allow for the possibility of colony establishment.
  • When possible, install the integrated nest boxes high up and under the eaves of the roof. If that is not possible, then install the nest box at least 4 meters high in the facade.
  • Do not install the nest boxes directly over doors or windows. Facades facing north and east are preferred as they are generally more sheltered from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. It is also possible to install the nest box in another facade as long as it is well-protected from sun, rain, and wind (for example, under a roof overhang where there are no protruding pipes or parts that obstruct the entrance). Do not install the nest boxes where there is exposure to direct sunlight or on southwest facades where there is a chance of rain intrusion.
  • Do not add nesting material.

This integrated nest box does not require cleaning. Swifts themselves will remove excess nesting material (for example, if a house sparrow has been in the nest box).
