Description
This built-in nesting box is suitable as compensation for swifts’ nest sites in facades and can be used in new construction. It can also be used in existing buildings during renovations or post-insulation projects. The built-in brick height fits perfectly into a 3-layer wall format. House sparrows also often use this built-in nest box, which is beneficial for swifts in discovering the box. If a swift wants to take over the nest box from a house sparrow, the sparrows will be evicted without mercy. The built-in nest box is made of WoodStone®, with a waterproof, glued Plywood back. WoodStone® is a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades.
wall.
This built-in brick is installed horizontally into the facade, with the front set back 2 to 3 cm, allowing stone strips to be placed in front. At the location of the square entrance in the box, you must create your own entrance opening in the stone strips. Make this entrance opening 65 mm wide and 30 mm high horizontally.
Install the built-in nest boxes preferably in groups, with a minimum horizontal and vertical spacing of 50 cm.
Where possible, install the built-in bricks high up, below the eaves. If that is not feasible, install them at least 4 meters high on the facade. Avoid placing boxes directly over doors or windows.
Facades facing north and east are preferred. Other wind directions are also possible (for example, directly under the roof overhang). Avoid installing the boxes in areas with full sun all day, and do not place them on southwest facades to prevent rain intrusion.
Do not add nesting material.
This built-in nest box does not require cleaning. Swifts will remove excess nesting material themselves (for example, if a house sparrow has occupied it).
