This built-in brick is ideal as a nesting site for house sparrows, but ring sparrows and tits may also use it. This built-in brick is suitable for new construction projects. Description

This built-in nesting box is suitable for new construction to compensate for house sparrow nest sites in facades. The internal dimensions are ideal for nesting house sparrows. The height of this built-in brick fits perfectly into a 4-layer wall format. Since sparrows live in colonies, installing several built-in bricks together is recommended. The built-in nest box is also frequently inhabited by other species, such as tits. This built-in nest box is made of WoodStone and can be opened at the front for cleaning, if desired. WoodStone is a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades.

  • Install the built-in nest box horizontally with the front side flush with the facade. Preferably install several together with a minimum horizontal and vertical spacing of 50 cm.
  • Place built-in bricks high up where possible, under the eaves. If that is not feasible, install them at least 3 meters high on the facade.
  • Avoid installing boxes directly over doors or windows.
  • Facades facing north and east are preferred. Other wind directions are possible (for example, directly under the roof overhang). Avoid installing the boxes in areas with full sun all day or on southwest facades due to the risk of rain intrusion.

This built-in nest box can be cleaned. To do this, remove the box door by unscrewing the screw at the top and twisting the bottom screw hook. Now the old nest can be removed. The best time to clean is well after the breeding season, starting in October. Sparrows will continue to use the built-in bricks during the winter months and may bring back nesting material. Breeding will not resume until April.
