Description
Woodpeckers do not readily use ordinary nest boxes. However, this birch trunk nest box has proven very attractive to the great spotted woodpecker, among others. The box features a small pre-drilled entrance that the woodpecker enlarges on its own. Additionally, the box has a thick, solid bottom where the woodpeckers carve a nest hole once they gain access. The box will likely only be used by woodpeckers for one year, as they prefer to carve a new cavity each year. The used nest box then provides an excellent nesting place for other birds such as tits, starlings, or nuthatches.
