Description
This nest box is also regularly used by house sparrows. This is beneficial in that it helps the swifts discover the nest box for their own use. If swifts want to use the box that house sparrows are occupying, the swifts will simply evict the sparrows. The nest box is made of WoodStone®, a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades. Installation is easy using the Z-hook and stainless steel screws provided. The nest box meets all the requirements outlined in the Bij12 document for swifts, in accordance with Dutch nature protection and conservation laws.
It is preferable to hang several of the WoodStone next boxes together, with a minimum horizontal and vertical spacing of 50 cm, to allow for the possibility of colony establishment. Facades facing north and east are preferred as they are generally more sheltered from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. It is also possible to hang the nest box on another facade as long as the box is well-protected from the elements (for example, under a roof overhang where there are no protruding pipes or parts that obstruct the entrance). Do not install the nest boxes where there is exposure to direct sunlight or on southwest facades where there is a chance of rain intrusion. Do not add nesting material.
Hanging and securing the WoodStone box is easy with the hardware provided. First, place the Z-hook in the desired location. The nest box can then be placed over the hook. It can be further secured using the plug and screw provided.
If desired, the box can be cleaned after the breeding season (preferably in the winter months). To do this, unscrew the box from the wall and take it off the hook. The opening at the back of the box allows for easy cleaning.
