Tawny owls nest in a variety of cavities in trees and sometimes in buildings. This nest box provides tawny owls with a spacious and safe nesting area. The extended sides at the top make it more difficult for martens to access the box; however, complete prevention is impossible due to the agility and resourcefulness of these predators.
The nest box is also favored by cave pigeons and jackdaws. If a tawny owl decides to use the box, it will chase away any other occupants.
The box can be cleaned after the breeding season (preferably in the winter months). When doing so, beware of disturbance because the tawny owls use the nest box year-round. Therefore, allow the work to be as short as possible.
