There are several species of bats that may use this bat box, depending on which species live in the area and where the box is hung. This box is suitable for summer roosting, and may also serve as shelter during mild winters.

Description

This bat box is ideal for use on trees, but it can also be placed on a building facade. The box is especially suitable for the Noctule and Brown Long-eared Bat. Other bat species may also use this bat box. This depends on which species live in the area and where the box is hung. The box is suitable for summer roosting and possibly also for maternity groups for the following species:

  • Common Pipistrelle
  • Nathusius’ Pipistrelle
  • Soprano Pipistrelle
  • Whiskered Bat
  • Brandt’s Bat
  • Barbastelle Bat
  • Natterer’s Bat
  • Daubenton’s Bat
  • Noctule
  • Pond Bat

In mild winters, possible use by:

  • Common Pipistrelle
  • Brown Long-eared Bat

This box is suitable for summer roosting, and may also serve as shelter during mild winters. The box is made of 100% WoodStone® and is divided into three chambers by wood panels to create different microclimates within the box. WoodStone® is a mix of 100% FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete. This robust material is environmentally sustainable and will last for decades.

  • Hang the bat box in a suitable location in a tree in a forest, park, or garden using the large screw hook provided.
  • Place the box at a minimum height of 3 meters.
  • The cables provided can be looped “loosely” around the trunk of the tree as additional stability.
  • The box can also be mounted on building facades.
  • The box can be hung facing any direction.
  • Ensure that the access routes to the box are unobstructed.
  • Do not place boxes above windows and doors.
  • Artificial light is disturbing to most bat species. Do not illuminate the box – or the flight path – or place the box near artificial light sources.
  • It is preferable to hang multiple boxes throughout an area. In doing so, vary the height of the boxes and the direction they are facing.

You can clean the bat boxes once a year in winter, preferably during a frost period. First, check that the boxes are not occupied. A special long-handled brush can be used to remove cobwebs and other debris. We also recommend checking the box annually for damage and ensuring it is still securely mounted on the tree.
