This squirrel box, developed with advice from the Dutch Squirrel Rescue Foundation (Stichting Eekhoornopvang Nederland), serves as a maternity box for the red squirrel and can also be used for hibernation. The wide entrance allows the squirrel to enter and exit easily, even while carrying a young one. The extra edge provides additional support and grip as they access the box. Occasionally, burrowing pigeons also use this box. It is made of exterior plywood and finished with a water-based lacquer, and the roof is covered with roofing material.

Recognized by:
- Place the box at least 4 meters high in a tree in a quiet place in the forest, in a park or in the garden.
- Do not place the squirrel box facing southwest because of rain intrusion and wind.
- First, mount the suspension bar to the back of the box using the bolts and wing nuts provided. Then the squirrel box can be attached to the tree.
- Adding nesting material is not necessary.
Before cleaning, always check carefully that the box is not in use. Squirrels can occupy the box year-round, and if they are regular visitors, cleaning is unnecessary.
If cave pigeons or jackdaws have nested in the box, it’s wise to clean it and remove the nesting material during the winter months.
