The Importance of Integrating Nature into Construction

The world is urbanizing at a rapid pace. More and more is being built to accommodate young people leaving the parental home, seniors wishing to downsize, and companies looking to expand. However, as humans occupy more space, nature in the Netherlands is losing ground.

Birds find fewer nesting opportunities, predators have less space to hunt, and insects are less effective at pollinating. This has direct consequences for biodiversity and the resilience of our ecosystem.

• Een sterkere verbinding met de natuur, wat bijdraagt aan een beter algemeen welzijn en lagere niveaus van stress, angst en depressie
• Een verbeterde luchtkwaliteit in de directe leefomgeving
• Minder hittestress en een afname van wateroverlast
• Mensen ervaren minder overlast van insecten

The Environment and Planning Act ensures that construction companies and private individuals have clear rules and obligations regarding building, renovating, insulating, developing, and redeveloping. This Act applies to virtually every project, from permit applications to public participation processes.

At the same time, the law calls for a broader perspective. Government agencies are increasingly embedding their ambitions regarding climate adaptation, biodiversity, and quality of life within their spatial plans. Consequently, nature-inclusive construction is no longer a discretionary add-on, but a key factor in public procurement and the permitting process. Those who respond to this proactively will avoid delays and strengthen their market position. The Environment and Planning Act is, therefore, not merely a legal framework, but also a strategic opportunity to build for the future.
